# xarray.DataArray.str.get

#### DataArray.str.get(i, default='')[[source]](https://github.com/pydata/xarray/blob/main/xarray/core/accessor_str.py#L335-L365)

Extract character number i from each string in the array.

If i is array-like, they are broadcast against the array and
applied elementwise.

* **Parameters:**
  * **i** ([`int`](https://docs.python.org/3/builtins/functions.html#int) or [array-like](https://numpy.org/doc/stable/glossary.html#term-array_like) of [`int`](https://docs.python.org/3/builtins/functions.html#int)) – Position of element to extract.
    If array-like, it is broadcast.
  * **default** ([`str`](https://docs.python.org/3/builtins/stdtypes.html#str) or [`bytes`](https://docs.python.org/3/builtins/stdtypes.html#bytes), *default*: `""`) – Value for out-of-range index.
* **Returns:**
  **items** ([array](https://numpy.org/doc/stable/glossary.html#term-array) of [`object`](https://docs.python.org/3/builtins/functions.html#object))
